Meet the Town Mayor

The current Mayor of Stamford is Councillor Amanda Wheeler, who serves as Chair of Stamford Town Council for the 2025/2026 municipal year.

Amanda moved to Stamford at the age of five and went to Malcolm Sargent Primary School, followed by Stamford High School. She then moved away for many years, at first studying Philosophy and Politics at Edinburgh University, and then living in Trinidad and London, where she worked as a theatre director, researcher and TV and radio producer, before retraining as a teacher at the University of London.

Having returned to Stamford 20 years ago with her husband and young family, Amanda still lives in the town centre with the youngest of her three children, Emma, and the family’s miniature schnauzer, Freddie.

She joined Stamford Town Council in May 2019 and has served as a councillor for six years. In that time, Amanda has been an active member of many committees, including Heritage and Collections, Climate and Environment, Finance and Governance, Cemetery and Allotments (now Assets and Services) and Events (now Civic and Community) as well as leading the Youth Council since its inception.

As well as her council duties, she still works as a teacher, specialising in drama and public speaking skills, and as an examiner, working for LAMDA drama school in London, as well as nationally and internationally.

She said: “I love Stamford, its green and blue spaces, its beautiful architecture, its shops, its restaurants, cafes, pubs and most of all its community. I have enjoyed working alongside and supporting many community groups over the past 20 years and getting to know the people who make this town so special.

“The charities I will support as Mayor will be Mindspace, 2nd Stamford Town Scouts and George’s Food Hub.

“I enjoy learning new things and every year I commit to a new hobby or skill – this year it’s running and later this year I will be running my first half marathon, raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

“When not in Stamford, I can often be found in the dress circle at one of London’s many theatres or at the Emirates Stadium, indulging in my love of live theatre and football.”
