Stamford Town Council was formerly a borough council prior to the local government reorganisation in 1974. Although a town council, its responsibilities and powers are the same as any parish council, with certain civic duties that it is required to undertake within its parish boundary. Town Council responsibilities include the management of the cemetery, the Red Lion Toilets, the allotments, the recreation ground and the town meadows.
The Town Council also organises a range of civic and community events throughout the year. The historic town hall is a popular venue for community events, weddings and other meetings organised by external organisations. Tours are available of the Town Hall, which is home to many significant pieces that form our Civic Regalia, as well as fascinating artwork and the renowned Phillips Collection. The grade-II* listed building, which was completed in 1779, features the Mayor’s Parlour, Court Room, Council Chamber, historic gaol, and a room dedicated to memorabilia from world famous conductor Malcolm Sargent.
Committees
The Council is structured with a number of committees to conduct its business efficiently. Stamford Town Council Councillors serve on a variety of committees that includes Heritage & Collections, Climate & Environment, Assets and Services, Planning, Finance & Governance, Tourism Advisory Committee and Civic and Community.
All of our Committee meetings are open to the public and are advertised at least three clear days in advance of the meeting date.
Working groups
When recommendations are made to the full Council, sometimes members of the Town Council are appointed to research and consult with professional bodies on a number of matters and then report back to the relevant committee. These smaller appointed groups are often called working groups, and they meet on an ad-hoc basis for short-term projects only.
Ward Boundaries
The five Stamford Wards are represented by 21 elected councillors.
